Holy Smoke
This is the second time I’m writing about Holy Smoke. Why? Because they’re freakin’ awesome.
I have a soft spot for smoky BBQ flavours. The kind that instantly pulls you back in time. For me, it’s childhood memories of camping trips along the Eastern coast of the United States, where my parents somehow always found the best smokehouses. One name is forever burned into my memory: Hog Heaven. Sticky fingers, smoky air, slow-cooked meat, and that feeling that food didn’t need to be fancy to be unforgettable.
Holy Smoke does exactly that. Their finger-licking ribs and juicy brisket hit that same nostalgic note. Proper smoke, real patience, and meat that speaks for itself.
This time around, Agathe, one of the owners, gave me a heads-up about their mocktails for Dry January. A good excuse (as if I needed one) to go back. She works tirelessly behind the bar, crafting drinks that actually belong next to BBQ, which is no small feat. My favourites? The virgin margarita and the virgin whiskey sour. The good news: they’re on the menu all year long. No need to wait for January.
And I don’t know if it’s possible, but I think I’m in love with their potatoes. These little gems are covered in smoked butter and topped with marinaded red onions and coriander. Now, I’m telling you, smoked butter is the missing piece in your culinary world you never knew you needed. Until you put one of these potatoes in your mouth and there’s no turning back. They’re addictive. Fair warning!
The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, the kind of place where you go with friends, get your hands dirty, and linger a little longer than planned. It’s honest food, generous portions, and a team that clearly loves what they do — both in the kitchen and behind the bar.
Some places you write about once. Others deserve a return visit, and a second love letter. Holy Smoke definitely falls into that second category.
