Al Piccolo Mondo


On Christmas Eve 2023, it was just the two of us, and I wanted to make the evening special. Having spent time compiling a list of restaurants for the holidays, I decided to follow my own recommendation this year. Al Piccolo Mondo had an outstanding menu available on December 24th, and the ambiance was perfect for celebrating this special day.

One of my favorite places in Brussels, this longstanding institution has been open since 1979. Initially founded by Leo Spagnuolo, it is now skillfully managed by his two sons, Valerio and Olivier. When I describe this restaurant to others, I often say it feels like a warm hug. Retaining its mid-80s chic charm, with beautiful banquettes, velvet walls, and charmingly decorated tables, the service reflects an almost forgotten approach to work. Bow ties abound, and sauces are crafted in the room, automatically lending a romantic feel and making the entire dining experience extra special.

For starters, we enjoyed homemade salmon gravlax and goose liver. Our main courses were exquisite; I had deer fillet served in a perfect Christmas manner, accompanied by a cooked apple with cranberries, braised Belgian endive, and celeriac purée. Michael opted for scallops gratiné with saffron and rice. For dessert, we both savored Poire Belle Hélène—a poached pear with melted chocolate and whipped cream.

This delightful meal was complemented by a fine bottle of Chianti and a glass of Chardonnay for Michael for his main dish. We concluded with coffees and two amaretto’s. The total bill came to 303€ for the two of us, and given the quality of the food, impeccable service, and charming setting, we were thoroughly pleased.

I extend my gratitude to the team at Al Piccolo Mondo for creating the perfect atmosphere for our celebration. We left with nothing but appreciation and broad smiles. They sacrificed their own Christmas Eve to ensure their loyal customers had an exceptional evening, and I cannot thank them enough for it.
